Origins Historical Perspectives According to Baptist historians there are, generally speaking, three views of the origins of the Baptist tradition. An older and marginal perspective, often referred to as the “successionist” view, claims that it is possible to trace an unbroken lineage of Baptist Christianity back to earliest Christianity, namely Jesus Christ himself, his apostles, and John the Baptist. A modified version of this view distinguishes between the Baptist tradition as an organized church-based phenomenon, originating in the 17th century, and Baptist beliefs or viewpoints, dating from the time of the New Testament apostles. A second perspective locates the origins of the Baptist tradition in its links to Anabaptist movements of the 16th century. A third view, more recently proposed and widely held, emphasizes English Puritanism and Separatism as the primary contexts from which the Baptist tradition emerged. It is this Puritan-Separatist approach that is, with variations, most widely held today, and that informs the narrative of Baptist history presented here. Beyond the matter of origins, questions related to the interpretation of the Baptist tradition tend to reflect various sub-traditions within the larger tradition, and thus tend to touch on matters of Baptist identity. What does the Separatist view of Baptist history offer? Why are questions of Baptist identity larger than lineage? Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship. For the Christian a marriage commitment is to God as well as to the spouse, and should be entered into only between partners who share a common faith. Mutual love, honor, respect, and responsibility are the fabric of this relationship, which is to reflect the love, sanctity, closeness, and permanence of the relationship between Christ and His church.

Megan Phelps-Roper, a twenty-three-year-old legal assistant, seized the opportunity. She believed that all manner of other tragedies—war, natural disaster, mass shootings—were warnings from God to a doomed nation, and that it was her duty to spread the news of His righteous judgments. To protest the increasing acceptance of homosexuality in America, the Westboro Baptist Church picketed the funerals of gay men who died of AIDS and of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Phelps-Roper, who is tall, with voluminous curly hair and pointed features, volunteered to tweet for the congregation.
Ryan Dube They are accurate based on a large number of sources, many of which were not even cited for this article. The majority of the discomfort seems to come from the fact that many Mormons here feel the portrayal of those beliefs is inaccurate — which may be a valid argument. Discussing with our editor now. Thanks for the feedback. Ryan Dube Not really — if you took the time to look into my own past writing, you would see that I explore a long list of belief systems — people that belief in aliens, abductions, UFOs, reptiles, angels, ghosts, and in this case — the application of baptism-after-death, among other things.
As you can imagine, we tend to offend people that believe in aliens, UFOs, abductions, etc….

Mar 23, Scott Croft Looking for a completely countercultural path to marriage? Here’s how to apply God’s Word to dating, finding a spouse and getting married. The system today’s young men and women have inherited for finding and marrying a future spouse leaves a lot to be desired. We often hear complaints from readers about the confusion, hurt and sexual sin they’ve encountered despite their best intentions. Many want to know how they can go about getting to know someone and eventually getting married without getting hurt or compromising their faith.
At Focus on the Family, we’ve offered a range of resources and expert advice bringing biblical principles to bear in this area. Some of the messages we’ve presented have taken the position that Christians can apply their faith in such a way that they can still work within the system they’ve inherited. Other messages have stressed that Christians need to be much more counter-cultural.
Joshua Harris, for instance, has promoted a model of courtship that harkens back to a model used broadly before modern dating evolved. People attempting to follow a courtship model within today’s culture, however, often run into a lot of practical questions, such as, “What if her dad is unavailable or uninterested in being involved? Ethics and Community overview Judaism is a religious tradition with origins dating back nearly four thousand years, rooted in the ancient near eastern region of Canaan which is now Israel and Palestinian territories. Originating as the beliefs and practices of the people known as “Israel,” classical, or rabbinic, Judaism did not emerge until the 1st century C. Judaism traces its heritage to the covenant God made with Abraham and his lineage — that God would make them a sacred people and give them a holy land.
The primary figures of Israelite culture include the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the prophet Moses, who received God’s law at Mt. Judaism is a tradition grounded in the religious, ethical, and social laws as they are articulated in the Torah — the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. Jews refer to the Bible as the Tanakh, an acronym for the texts of the Torah, Prophets, and Writings.
Other sacred texts include the Talmud and Midrash, the rabbinic, legal, and narrative interpretations of the Torah. The contemporary branches of Judaism differ in their interpretations and applications of these texts. The four main movements within Judaism today are Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist, respectively ranging from traditional to liberal to religiously progressive in their application of Torah. While diverse in their views, Jews continue to be unified on the basis of their common connection to a set of sacred narratives expressing their relationship with God as a holy people.
Judaism tends to emphasize practice over belief.

Probably not all Baptist churches would be that way, but that one was. Pentecostals are encouraged to marry other Pentecostals, partly because many Baptists and others believe that our way of worship is wrong, but some Pentecostals do marry people of other denominations.

Reared a Good Calvinistic Baptist My immediate family didn’t attend any church regularly until I was about 12 years old. We began attending church when an associate pastor of the local Baptist church moved across the street from us and invited our family to join them at services. Click here to join! The Catholic Church does not forbid Catholics from marrying people who are not Catholic. It has been the practice of the Church to marry non-Catholics and Catholics for quite some time. The Church refers to these types of marriages as mixed-marriages. However, express permission of the local bishop is necessary. One of the reasons that the Church exists is to safeguard the souls of those in its care. If a Catholic insists on marriage to a non-Catholic, the Church allows it, but wants to protect the soul of the Catholic in the marriage by making sure the non-Catholic understands the moral teaching and obligations of the Catholic party and assure that the Catholic is not in a position hostile to his or her faith.
Marriage to a Non-Baptized Person The Catholic Church calls the union of a Catholic to someone who has not been baptized a disparity of cult. In the above example the two people are baptized Christians of different confessions or denominations , but a non-baptized person is not a part of the Christian family. When it involves someone who has not been baptized then the marriage requires an express dispensation from the bishop in order for the union to be considered valid.
Scripture tells us that the unbelieving spouse is made holy through the believing spouse 1 Cor. Sacramentally in marriage the spouses are the conduits of grace to each other and in a mixed-marriage of disparity of cult the Catholic is a conduit of grace to the non-believer. If this leads to a free conversion of belief by the non-believer then the church rejoices.

These true Baptists added the adjectives Fundamental and Independent to their name in order that they not be identified with the false practices and teaching of the doctrinally unsound churches using the Baptist name.
